The Hari Art Prize, in collaboration with A Space For Art is poised to become an integral part of The Hari London’s annual rolling art programme, celebrating the global roster of artistic talent attracted to London.

In 2023, from a list of over 1000 applicants, a short list of 20 artists were chosen by an elite panel of judges overseen by Dr. Aron Harilela, CEO and Chairman of Harilela Hotels Ltd. The three finalists were then announced at a VIP award event at The Hari on 15 November 2023, including runner up Bo Sun!

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Bo Sun, London based Chinese artist. I graduated from Central Saint martins, Fine Art in 2022. Since then I have been focusing on developing my work in my studio in Brixton. Later in the year I will be perusing my Master degree in Fine art specialised in sculpture.

Could you tell us about your overall experience participating in The Hari Art Prize?

I had a great experience participating in The Hari Art prize from the very beginning till the end. It’s very straightforward in terms of the entry application and the communication with the team is very efficient and smooth. And I had a wonderful time at the prize ceremony at The Hari hotel too.

Why did you feel it was important to enter The Hari Art Prize and where did you hear about the competition?

I heard about the Hari Art Prize via the art newsletter “Shock of the Now” by Hector Campbell. I felt like it is important for young artist like me who graduated from the school that need some kind of exposure and connection with other fellow artists. The Hari Art Prize offered an opportunity for young talent to get such exposure and connection.

What is the story behind your winning piece?

The winning piece “weathering in vain” was made in 2023 as part of my first dual artists exhibition at Sherbet Green, London. The piece is a continuation of my exploration of presenting exo-skeleton structure with mixtures of industrial materials such as silicone, aluminium. The piece was made majority with aluminium parts and were put together via mechanical connections. The silicone pieces were threaded through the aluminium parts, for me it holds the notion of some kind of organic parasite attaching into the metal structure.

What are your thoughts on the other pieces shortlisted?

I am pleased to see a selection of shortlisted work spanning from sculptures, paintings, photography, drawings etc. It is exciting to see different mediums and techniques each artist employed in their works.

Are there any upcoming projects you want to talk to us about?

I am going to be part of two group exhibitions in April and May in two different project spaces in London and I am waiting for more details at the moment. This year I would like to explore bigger scale work and employ more 3D printing resin in the new works.

Would you recommend The Hari Art Prize and encourage others to enter next year? If so, why?

I would definitely encourage people to participate for the art prize despite the financial support for the first prize winner, it is a great opportunity to meet people from the judge panel as well as other emerging artists. It creates a great network opportunity and public exposure, which I think is crucial for every emerging artist.
