1. Central Market

Before the renovation, the Central Market sold various poultry, fish, meat, and vegetables, making it the top choice for Central residents to buy groceries. It is said that the first generation of Central Market was contracted and operated by a Chinese named “Ah Huan,” opening on June 10, 1842, and moving to its current location in 1858.

Before the government reclaimed it for revitalization projects, the market underwent three reconstructions.

The Central Market revitalization project began in 2017 and was completed in 2020, reopening to the public and providing a “city oasis” leisure space for office workers and residents in the bustling Central district. The current Central Market offers a variety of popular dining and retail shops, including street snacks, local brand boutiques, and various trendy shops.

The revitalized atrium and pedestrian walkways have added vibrancy and light, becoming a new hotspot for photo opportunities in Hong Kong’s Central and Western District.

2. Hollywood Road

When it comes to the most popular photo spots in Hong Kong, Hollywood Road is definitely among the top contenders. Built in 1844, Hollywood Road was the first street to be completed after Hong Kong’s opening to the world, and it still retains many British characteristics to this day. This one-kilometer-long street is home to various galleries, cafes, bars, and street art, truly embodying the unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures.

In the Central and Western District on Hollywood Road, street art is everywhere, with unique murals hidden in the alleys and narrow streets. Among them, the Kowloon Walled City mural located at the intersection of 46 Gough Street and 48 Hollywood Road is the most famous.

This mural was created by British artist Alex Croft, who moved to Hong Kong. Inspired by the long-demolished Kowloon Walled City, it features a bright blue background complemented by the colorful buildings of the Walled City, showcasing the vibrant and people-oriented atmosphere of old Hong Kong. If you’re interested in local Hong Kong culture, you absolutely have to visit Hollywood Road and check in with this iconic mural!

In addition, Moro Street near Hollywood Road, also known as Antique Street, sells a variety of antiques, such as vintage items, old postcards, records, posters, and more. It is definitely a must-visit for any hipster passing by. In recent years, many local vintage shops and local fashion designers have also set up shop here, gradually transforming this street into “Hong Kong’s Shimokitazawa,” making it worth exploring slowly!

3. Ōdate

Tai Kwun is located on Hollywood Road in the Central and Western District, and it was formerly a complex of police station buildings with over 170 years of history, including the Central Police Station, the Central Magistracy, and the Victoria Prison.

These three buildings were declared as declared monuments by the Antiquities and Monuments Office in 1995. Tai Kwun completed its revitalization project in 2018 and officially opened to the public, transforming into a hotspot for Hong Kong’s youth culture and a place.

The current Tai Kwun complex consists of 16 buildings, including exhibition halls, art museums, cafes, bars, and bookstores, combining culture, art, and history. It is definitely a must-visit spot for cultural enthusiasts. Among them, the Dragonfly bar has been selected as one of TimeOut’s “50 Best Bars in Hong Kong.” While visiting Tai Kwun, don’t miss the opportunity to try the drinks at this famous bar.

The “open prison” area also offers a unique visiting experience!
