Cheung Chau is one of the most popular destinations among Hong Kong’s outlying islands. Although it is only 2.9 square kilometres in size, it is rich in history, culture and natural beauty, making it ideal for families.
- Cheung Chau Bun Festival: One of the city’s most spectacular festivals marks the end of spring, when thousands of visitors ferry over to the tiny, serene island for the Cheung Chau Bun Festival. Comprising the piu sik parade with children dressed up as deities paraded on stilts, lion dances, Taoist festivals and the exciting Bun Scrambling Competition, the festivities are on China’s national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. From the buns to the bun towers, everything is prepared by the local community, so this is truly a unique Hong Kong festival.
- Cycling around the island: If you want to explore the island’s natural beauty, why not rent a bicycle and enjoy a leisurely ride around the island, travelling through the bustling streets and lanes with a gentle breeze.
Transport: Take the MTR to Hong Kong Station or Central Station and walk to Central Pier No.5 for the Cheung Chau ferry.
