Eco-friendly hotels in Hong Kong usually put a lot of thought into their building designs, incorporating elements that promote sustainable development. The hotel lobby, being the first place that all guests see, naturally influences their first impression of the hotel. Therefore, many hotels invest extra effort into the design of their lobbies to showcase their commitment to sustainable development and social responsibility as eco-friendly hotels.

The lobby will use more renewable and recyclable materials such as bamboo, reclaimed wood, and steel to replace traditional building materials. This not only helps reduce carbon emissions during the material production process but also decreases the extraction of natural resources.

In terms of design, the lobbies of eco-friendly hotels incorporate many natural elements. For example, they use natural light and ventilation, making good use of natural resources to provide functionality. By utilizing large windows, skylights, and transparent designs, they can reduce the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning during the day, thereby helping the hotel save energy and contributing to the sustainability of the Earth. Since we accommodate over a hundred guests, a significant amount of electricity is consumed for lighting, ventilation, and heating and cooling adjustments. Therefore, eco-friendly hotels must put in considerable effort to save power in order to maintain sustainable development while also reducing costs. The hotel industry is one of the largest consumers of energy, emitting a substantial carbon footprint and impacting Hong Kong’s environment.

Eco-friendly hotels can reduce electricity usage by incorporating advanced architectural designs and structures with insulation and daylighting features.

For example, they can install insulation materials and double-glazed windows to lower the electricity demand for heating and cooling management, or use large windows or skylights to bring in natural light, reducing guests’ reliance on artificial lighting during the day.

Hong Kong eco-friendly hotels also tend to use smaller, lower power consumption, and longer-lasting LED lights, further reducing electricity consumption for lighting.

The Hari installed high-efficiency building equipment, resulting in the project’s overall electricity consumption being at least 26% lower than the baseline standards of the Energy Efficiency Practices for Building Services Installations by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, thereby earning the BEAM Plus Silver rating.

Eco-friendly hotels in Hong Kong also adopt efficient HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems, which automatically adjust the temperature based on the room’s usage status through smart temperature control systems. For example, when guests are out, the system automatically reduces the air conditioning intensity or increases the heating temperature to minimize unnecessary electricity consumption.

Finally, some eco-friendly hotels also introduce renewable energy, such as installing solar panels on the hotel rooftop to meet part of their electricity needs, replacing traditional energy with green energy to reduce pollution emissions.

The Hari collaborates with the Swedish company NORDAQ to provide sustainable clean drinking water for eco-friendly hotels in Hong Kong using patented technology.

The Hari has fully introduced NORDAQ drinking water, providing guests with high-quality locally filtered drinking water, while effectively reducing the hotel’s water consumption, fully committing to Hong Kong’s sustainable development efforts!

The Hari firmly believes that businesses born and raised in the community should support the local community to ensure its health and sustainable development. The Hari participated in the local enterprise Greeners Action’s event.

Green Action was founded in 2014 as a social enterprise focused on environmental protection and organized Hong Kong’s first coffee grounds recycling campaign: “Citywide Coffee Grounds Recycling Campaign.”

The collected coffee grounds are processed and handled at the self-established facility “Coffee Base” in Hong Kong. The Hari is actively involved, collecting coffee grounds throughout the hotel to support the recycling initiative.

Furthermore, The Hari is also working to raise awareness about mental health in Hong Kong. OCD & Anxiety Support HK is a charity organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with mental health issues, aiming to raise awareness, provide assistance, and create a supportive community for those affected.

The Hari is fully committed to participating in raising local awareness and concern about mental health issues, dispelling societal misconceptions about mental illness.

On “World Mental Health Day” and throughout the entire month of October, hotel staff will wear green ribbons symbolizing the promotion of mental health to express their support for patients troubled by mental illnesses and to raise awareness of the mental health issues faced by employees in the workplace.
