If you are passionate about French culture, arts, and humanities, you simply cannot miss the city’s highly anticipated annual cultural extravaganza—”French May”(1)! What cultural activities does the French May Arts Festival have in store this year? What are the key highlights of Le French GourMay? The Hari Hong Kong has compiled all the essential information on the highlight events to help you navigate and fully enjoy French May!

What is French May?

Established in 1993 and organized by the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, French May has evolved into one of the largest and most spectacular cultural events in Asia. Presenting over 100 cultural programmes each May and attracting over 350,000 participants annually, it has long become an indispensable page in Hong Kong’s cultural calendar.

The festival’s programmes are incredibly diverse, encompassing classical and contemporary music, dance, opera, theatre, and film retrospectives, as well as visual arts exhibitions and public art installations. It also features the immensely popular “Le French GourMay,” truly manifesting its core philosophy: “Touch Everything, Be Everywhere and For Everyone.”

French May Arts Festival Highlight Events Introduction

As the flagship component of French May, this year’s Arts Festival brings a series of world-class exhibitions and performances. Whether you are an art aficionado or a first-time explorer, you will find a programme to your liking. Here are a few highlight events we have selected for you:

Yekwon Sunwoo and Quatuor Elmire (2)

Classical music lovers are in for a highly anticipated cross-border collaboration. South Korean pianist Yekwon Sunwoo, the gold medalist of the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will share the stage with the rising French string ensemble, Quatuor Elmire.

Yekwon Sunwoo is renowned in the music world for his masterful technique and delicate musical interpretations, while Quatuor Elmire has rapidly risen to prominence in Europe with their vibrant renditions and high degree of synergy. This collaboration between piano and string quartet will unfold a musical dialogue flowing between tension and harmony through multiple classic chamber music masterpieces.

Audiences will be immersed in the emotional interplay between the instruments—sometimes impassioned, sometimes tender—experiencing a deeply layered auditory charm. This is undoubtedly one of the must-see focal performances of the French May Arts Festival.
