Meet Chan Ka Kiu

The Hari Hong Kong launches The Hari Art Prize in collaboration with A Space For Art to set the stage for young talents to unleash their artistic cells to the full, contributing to propel the vitality of the art scene in Hong Kong.

The Hari Hong Kong announced at a special award ceremony on March 13 that Chan Ka Kiu won the coveted first prize for her video installation “Tickle Tickle”. She received a HK$100,000 cash award generously donated by Dr. Aron Harilela, CEO and chairman of Harilela Hotels Limited and founder of The Hari Hong Kong.

Over 600 Hong Kong-based self-taught artists and recent art graduates within the first 10 years of their art career applied for the second annual art prize, more than double the number of applicants for the inaugural 2023 art prize.

How does your life and the world around you influence your art, and how does art influence your life?

Being an artist is not just a job or a career path; it is an identity. It has certainly influenced my life in every possible way. In fact, I stick with being an artist because it has always reminded me to be more conscious in my everyday life, constantly observing and asking the “whys.” If you pay enough attention, everything can be interesting. I love that, as an artist, you can highlight what you think might be easily missed in our daily lives—things that might be taken for granted—and turn them into something creative and fun.

Every artist hopes their work can accomplish something or make someone feel a certain way. What do you want your art to do?

I don’t think about the end goal of my works. I like to take it step by step, creating one piece at a time, seeing what my art will lead to and where it will take me, as well as what it brings to my audiences. Hopefully, visiting my exhibitions will be an immersive experience that takes you away from the world for a little while.

What mediums do you gravitate most towards and why?

I work mostly with moving images and installations. I love them because they can make the entire art-viewing experience more immersive. Watching a video is, in my opinion, the closest way to talking to a person as an artist, and creating art has always been a means of communication.

What are some of the difficulties you face while creating art?

Everything is difficult when you’re making art! Each time, you have to create something from nothing, and it’s challenging, especially when I work with different materials.

Why did you feel it was important to enter The Hari Art Prize?

The Hari Art Prize is a very new art prize in Hong Kong, but I think it does bring people together, and it’s quite an exciting experience!

What do you plan to do with the prize money?

I plan to upgrade my studio equipment and also put some of the money towards realising my next project.

What are your thoughts on the other pieces?

There are many artists I like and whose practices I have closely followed who participate in the competition. It’s amazing to see their works outside a white cube setting. Seeing them blend into the hotel and provide a new experience for viewers is very interesting—I love that!
